Join Us at the Table: Meals at the 2025 Denman Island Readers and Writers Festival
The Denman Island Readers and Writers Festival has always been more than just words on a page—it’s about conversations that carry into the evening, ideas that ripple out over shared meals, and a community that nourishes both the mind and the senses.
This July, we invite you not only to attend our exceptional readings and author talks, but to also pull up a chair and join us for a series of thoughtfully prepared meals—a cherished Festival tradition, this year hosted under the covered Rec Centre (Pavilion), on tables that invite connection, comfort, and the occasional spirited debate.
Curated by Denman’s own Chef Evan, each meal is a celebration in its own right—featuring locally sourced ingredients, global inspiration, and seasonal West Coast flair:
- Friday Lunch features shrimp burritos and tortilla soup, followed by a luscious tres leches cake. Our vegetarian meal will be corn and bean burritos. On Friday Dinner, enjoy pork tenderloin with Vietnamese-style vegetables and rice, topped off with Pie by the Yard made with seasonal fruit. The vegetarian option will trade pork for Vietnamese crepes, with vegetables and rice.
- Saturday Lunch brings savoury crêpes (seafood, ham & cheese, or mushroom & herb), served with a fresh local greens salad and a delightful raspberry Oreo cake. Saturday Dinner offers a bold and aromatic Sicilian fish stew, crusty bread, lemon orzo, and the grand finale: baklava cheesecake. For the vegetarian dish we have fish replacement of seared firm tofu dusted with ground bean and sun-dried tomato crust.
These meals aren’t just about food—they’re an invitation to linger, to mingle with fellow Festival-goers and engage in casual conversation with the very authors whose words have sparked your imagination.
