Book Launch for Des Kennedy’s new novel: Commune

Sunday November 5th, 2pm – Denman Hall

Hello all R&W Festival supporters.
This notice is to let you know about an upcoming event not linked to the festival but of interest to islanders generally. It’s a book launch for Des Kennedy’s new novel, Commune, along with a big screen slide show and fun commentary, looking-back to how things were on this little island in the 1970s, 80s and 90s…days of beauty and community, of change and periodic tumult, similar to what the fictional Commune vividly describes.
Celebrated author Michael Christie (who’s been to our festival several times) calls Des’ story “a gorgeous ode to dreams and their dreamers, a story of sex, soil and sacrifice…told with narrative verve through quicksilver prose.” The launch of this new novel will be one part of a gala event at the community hall at 2:00 on the afternoon of Sunday, November 5th. (ALERT! Clocks change back an hour the night before.)
Des will give a brief reading from the book and Sandy will present her remembering the 70’s chapter from Dancing in Gumboots. Juan Barker will be serving as MC.
The main portion of the program will be an illustrated talk by Des of actual goings-on on Denman throughout those decades. Bare-knuckle homesteading, RCMP pot raids, fractious public meetings, hippie fairies, mass arrests at Strathcona Park and Clayoquot Sound, log-booming at Buckley Bay, birth of the Carmen Mirandas, untreated sewage dumping at Cape Lazo, Wymen’s festivals, Home and Garden Tour successes, preventing the Old School from being sold off, theatrical extravaganzas and a whole, whole lot more. Not to be missed!
Admission is by donation (5-10 dollars) with all proceeds going to the two affordable housing groups on Denman, Denman Green and Denman Gray:). Tickets can be bought at the door. Abraxas Books will be on hand with copies of Commune and will be donating a portion of book sales to the housing groups.
